Air cargo should see China-Europe rail services as added competition

The air cargo industry should see the proliferation of rail services between China and Europe as added competition.

Speaking on the side lines of the Fiata World Congress in Dublin, Ivan Petrov, chief executive of forwarder TransXpress and Fiata senior vice president, said that the number of rail services between Asia and Europe had grown rapidly over recent years.

He said rail services offered lower prices than airfreight and faster transit times, of around two weeks, than the five week ocean journey.

He said the rail services provided more service options for forwarders and therefore air cargo should see them as extra competition.

During a presentation earlier in the session, Petrov said that in 2013 there were 72 block train journeys between Asia and Europe. Last year, this figure grew to 815 and is expected to reach 1,200 by the end of 2016.

Meanwhile, the value of cargo carried on these services stood at $1.1bn in 2013 and this year is projected to reach $19bn.

He added that today, 10 cities in China run block rail services to 11 cities in seven European countries.

While these growth numbers are impressive, the amount of trade carried in 2015 by Asia-Europe rail represented just 2.2% of the total market and there are challenges ahead.

Petrov explained that at the moment competition levels are limited as there are just four rail companies offering services, there are restricted routing options and a restricted number of border terminals for re-loading of cargo between different rail gauges.

He also questioned whether there was a real market for these services as transport by rail is heavily subsidised.

Hans Kersten, director of freight at the International Union of Railways, also identified other challenges for the services.

He said there were infrastructure bottlenecks, different operational rules and legal regimes between the various countries, the amount of time it takes to cross borders was unpredictable and there was a traffic imbalance in favour of the westbound direction.

However he also identified opportunities for the rail services to grow further as production in China shifts from coastal to inland location – although this was mainly a threat to sea transport – longer and heavy trains are developed to increase productivity and the UN is working on global harmonisation of railway laws.

These are the slogans reflecting to the new face of our company on the logistics market, as well as launched new brand and website in process.

Created 25 years ago by a few professional forwarders inherited the long-term experience of our profession since 1950s, TransExpress is an established and modern company.As from the beginning 80% of cargo volumes are generated and paid in Europe and globally. This is to prove the assessment for TransExpress on the foreign markets in terms of quality, efficiency and neutrality. We do appreciate the long-term strategic partnership with some of the best companies in Europe, as well as through participation of  alliances of independent forwarders we do achieve our full global network.  We are members of CPN (Cargo Partners Network), WCA (World Cargo Alliance) and IBS (Interessengemeinschaft der Bahnspediteure).At  the same time we commit an effort to contribute to logistics efficiency of our Bulgarian customers and their trust on us is of real importance. We shall be much more active in future on the local market.We are socially responsible company not only by encouraging and operating ecological modes of transports as a priority, but also as being very active in the work of our associations representing the branch of freight forwarding  and logistics on national, European and global scene: NSBS, CLECAT, FIATA.   Thanks to such a leadership position we do contribute to better understanding and increasing of the role of the logistics company within the economy of Bulgaria, EC and other parts of the world.

We are launching the project for build-up of multimodal logistics platform Sofia West with an open access on the territory of the rail station Voluyak and ring road of Sofia where we are looking forward to a Platform for partnership and network with railway operators from Bulgaria and neighbouring countries and those in Central and Western Europe, Ukraine, Georgia and why not China; with logistics providers and other terminal operators; with Rail Infra and Sofia Municipality, Ministry of Transport and Communicating of Bulgaria, EC and the funding institutions, UIRR. Our partners for the project are consultants, architects, engineers, building-up companies and investors in order to allow it be functionate in next few years to come.

Finally, we are to thank those who established the company, made this project to happen in a sustainable way for 25 years now. We are to appreciate contribution of all members of staff of TransExpress and related companies for their efforts to identify our company with the label of quality and trust in logistics. Some of them are not among us anymore, few found another career development, but the main asset in terms of co-workers are with us today and we do rely on our team for the future stage of development.

We should thank to our famillies for their understanding and support in difficult moments and  sacrificed their comfort.

Intermodal Round Table and Road Map for Bulgaria

On February 25, 2014. in the building of MTITC , Hall 6 was held “Intermodal Round Table and Road Map for Bulgaria”. This is a project of the European Commission “COSMOS”, in which Trans Express, the German consultants Combi Consult, Hakone and MTITC are co-organizers. The event was under the patronage of the Minister of MTITC – Mr. Daniel Papazov .

Moderators were consultants from Germany , Mr. Uwe Zonderman of Kombi Consult Mr. Nicklas Galonske of Hakone .

The meeting was attended by experts from MTITC , the project countries and representatives of the transport business.

The European Commission representative Dr. Gerhard Troche “DG MOVE” also attended and presented the key points and factors in the development of intermodality in Europe.

Thus provide a flexible opportunity for a meeting between the participants and the representatives of the Ministry and of the highest levels in the companies related directly to the management and development of the existing infrastructure and the development of intermodal transport schemes.

The participation of Trans Express in the project is a recognition of our contribution to the implementation of co-modal and inter-modal transport and the development of intermodal terminal Sofia- West.
